Mitrovačka gimnazija

Mitrovačka gimnazija

Mitrovačka gimnazija is a secondary school in Sremska Mitrovica, offering four different programmes, depending on orientation: scientific, social, IT and general studies. Bilingual education is also available for students who want to take their lessons in English language. Since 2016 our school welcomes seventh and eighth grade students from primary school, talented in mathematics and computer science.

Gimnazija has a long history, being established in July, 1838. In April, 1928 new building for Gimnazija was projected by Serbian architect Momir Korunović in the style of neobyzantine academism. It was known by many different names, from ’Mala realka’ and ’Državna realna gimnazija kralja Petra I Velikog Oslobodioca’ to ’Gimnazija Ivo Lola Ribar’. In 2007 the name was changed to ’Mitrovačka gimnazija’, keeping that name to this day.

There are aproximately 800 students in four grades of secondary school and two grades of primary school. Gimnazija can offer many extracurricular activities for students, including choir, orchestra, drama club, literary club, and its students are involved in charity activities. Museum of Srem and art gallery are a stone’s throw away from school, thus making it easier for teachers to organize some of their lessons there, better acquainting students with material they are covering. Besides daily trips to different parts of our country, Mitrovačka Gimnazija organizes excursions to a variety of other countries (Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia…). We are hosts to many foreign students coming from Germany, Australia, United States, Ukraine, and our students are encouraged to participate in exchange programmes and international projects.
